PHILIP
MARSHALL was born in
Yorkshire in 1921, and trained
in that country and in
Lincolnshire, where he played
his first church service at the
age of 12 - commencing a career
confined to those counties ever
after. Studying with Whitely
Singleton (Brighouse Parish
Church), the diplomas of the
Royal College of Organists were
gained in 1945-46, with Limpus
Prize for A.R.C.O., and Limpus,
Harding and Read Prizes for
F.R.C.O. After service in H.M:
Forces he was for a short time
Sub-Organist to Dr. Melville
Cook at Leeds Parish Church. The
degree of B.Mus. (University of
Durham) was completed in 1950,
with special commendation in
Tudor counterpoint. 1951-57
Organist of Boston Parish
Church, Lincs. Degree of Doctor
in Music (Durham) completed in
1955 after study with Dr,
Francis Jackson (York Minster).
1957-66 Organist of Ripon
Cathedral, also holding
Conductorship of Harrogate
String Orchestra and Ripon
Choral Society. 1966-(today)
Lincoln Cathedral. Organist and
Master of the Choristers, and
Conductor, Lincoln Music Society
and Lincoln Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Marshall is also an
Associate of the Royal College
of Music, and Fellow of Trinity
College, London.
