HERRICK
BUNNEYS, who performs the
recital on this record, is a
Londoner who has lived in
Edinburgh since 1946. He was
educated at University College
School and at the Royal College
of Music, where amongst other
awards he gained the Dannreuther
Prize for a performance of
Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.
3. After six years in World War
II as Adjutant of a Royal
Signals unit, and later as a
Staff Officer, he was appointed
Organist and Master of the Music
at St. Giles' Cathedral. He
broadcasts frequently, as player
and speaker, and as Director of
the Edinburgh University Singers
has often appeared with them in
recitals at the Freemasons' Hall
during Edinburgh International
Festivals. He conducts the
Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and
is Organist to the University.
But his main activity is the
direction of the St. Giles'
Singers and of the music in the
cathedral, where the services
are a blend of choral and
congregational: the emphasis is
on the music of the 20th
century. Chairman of the
Edinburgh Youth Orchestra, and a
Director of the Scottish
National Orchestra, he travels
widely as organist and
adjudicator, and was awarded the
M.V.O. in 1964. He has twice
performed the complete organ
works of J. S. Bach in a series
of 16 recitals in St. Giles
during the three weeks of the
Edinburgh Festical.
