LIONEL
DAKERS was born at
Rochester, Kent, in 1924. He was
a pupil, at York Minster, of Sir
Edward Bairstow and after five
years' service in the Army
during the last war, he
continued his studies at the
Royal Academy of Music in
London. He was Assistant
Organist of St. Georges's
Chapel, Windsor Castle, from
1950 to 1954 and subsequently
became Organist of ripon
Cathedral until his appointment
to Exeter Cathedral in 1957. In
addition to his main work as
Organist ans Master of the
Choristers at the Cathedral, he
conducts the Exeter Musical
Society and Exeter Chamber
Orchestra. He delights in
travel, either for making music
or for pleasure and in this
capacity he has visited much of
the African continent and also
the United States; he is also a
devoted Francophile. In his
spare moments of recreation, he
is an ardent book collector,
specialising in modern first
editions.
